In 2009, master of techno, dubstep, house, and the space in between, Dave Huismans, also known as A Made Up Sound, delivered “Archive,” an excellent four track EP on Dutch label Clone Basement Series. “Archive II,” Huismans’ second installation on Clone of house and techno maneuvers drops in July.
“Hang Up,” the A-side of “Archive II,” is a funky house jam built around samples of rhythm guitar and organ loops with congruently lithe synthesizer riffs and bass line. “Sweetback,” on the other hand, is a techno tune full of carefully crafted suspense, all loose rhythmic, percussive synthesizers and airy, inharmonious atmospheres, peppered with ride cymbals.
Both tunes on “Archive II” would work well as a first listen on a dancefloor, but repeated exposure, particularly to “Sweetback,” also reveals his dedication and attention to detail. Complex dimension is the name of the game on “Sweetback,” where the soundscape is accented with the clattering of percussion, the pealing of descending synths, and distant bleeps. Essential 12”.
