Welcome to my blog, Phil’s Picks, where you can read about music and visual art. My motivation in starting this blog is to share with you the art that moves me, the art that I love. Here you will be exposed primarily, but not exclusively, to dance music, graffiti, and street art, so if that sounds like your cup of tea, then check back here regularly.

To start, I’ll talk about the picture I’ve chosen for the header on my blog. The picture is one I took of a mural/graffiti production in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco on Polk St. near Geary St.  Victor Reyes, a prominent graffiti writer/painter painted the bird you see. You may already be familiar with Reyes’ work, but if you are not, understand that he firmly established himself in the graffiti world and is known for his versatile painting styles that include vibrant, multicolored letters whose forms range from funky wildstyle to those that resemble bird feathers and calligraphic flourishes. He doesn’t rely exclusively on spray cans, but also employs brushes, and Reyes’ work can be seen all over San Francisco from legal/permission walls to train tracks, yards, trucks, and more. Of late, Reyes completed a project titled “Mispelled,” an exhibition of his unique variations on the alphabet which was on display at Robert Berman/E6 Gallery in San Francisco. The installation has passed now, but if you explore the city, you can see some of the letters in alleyways and street corners from Market St. to the Mission District.
